< How X-Men Could Appear in...
Universal is preparing for another dino-mite installment to its Jurassic franchise, and it sounds like two new massive monsters could be making their way into J.A. Bayona’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Alongside Velociraptors, T-Rexes, and terrifying hybrids, the series has showcased some pretty impressive dinosaurs across its first four movies. While Fallen Kingdom has already confirmed the return of fan-favorites Rexy and Blue, the latest details hint that two more carnivores could find a place in the upcoming sequel.
According to Jurassic Outpost, Carlton Kids’ official Fallen Kingdom AR book mentions both the Baryonyx and a new hybrid species. The description reads as follows:
“Learn how to bond with and train alpha Velociraptor “Blue”, then use her as your protector and guide as you encounter other dinosaurs through the app. From brand-new movie dinosaur characters including awesome Baryonyx and a terrifying new hybrid breed, to old favourites like T. Rex and Stegosaurus, this Jurassic World AR book will wow readers all over again.”
Admittedly, the inclusion of the dinos in an AR book doesn’t confirm their appearance in Bayona’s movie. Games and tie-in material for movies like this regularly include elements that ultimately don’t show up in the movie, but it looks pretty likely. So, what can we learn?
Surviving mainly off a diet of fish, the Baryonx could reach heights of 10 feet tall and 30 feet long. For long-term fans of Jurassic, the name Baryonx may sound familiar. The dinosaur has been alluded to since way back in the first movie, with the Jurassic Park map showing it had a riverside paddock. Equally, the Baryonx was also shown to be an exhibit at Jurassic World, but still never made it into the movie’s runtime. The Baryonyx may not be as hostile as some of the other dinos, but don’t underestimate that InGen might not have been tinkering under the hood.
There have also been various teases from the set and behind the scenes that Fallen Kingdom will create a new dinosaur to compete with Jurassic World‘s Indominus Rex. Ever since Dr. Henry Wu stole that store of dino DNA at the end of Jurassic World, rumors have been rife that B.D. Wong’s scheming geneticist would be continuing his work. The Jurassic series has always had a loose grip on reality, with die-hard dinosaur fans calling out Spielberg and co. for their artistic licensing on what dinosaurs should really look like. With the Indominus being the star of Jurassic World, it looks like Bayona will be introducing that tentatively titled Indoraptor.
With Wu taking his research off-island, it perfectly sets up Jurassic World 2‘s promise to take the franchise to a whole new location. Either way, with it looking increasingly likely that the Baryonyx and this new beast will be premiering alongside Fallen Kingdom, it looks like the human characters like Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing just moved another notch down the food chain. However, with the trailer just around the corner, we don’t have long to wait to see what other surprises Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has in store.
