Daisy Ridley thanked fans on Twitter for participating in Friday’s “Rey Day” ahead of the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The actress reprises her role as the popular Force-wielding hero in Rian Johnson’s highly anticipated sequel, and the follow-up to The Force Awakens is expected to answer some major questions about her background that was hinted at in the previous installment. The film also promises plenty of pivotal moments featuring Ridley with Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, as she discovers how great her power with the Force really is.
Friday, Dec. 1 marked exactly two weeks until the wide release of The Last Jedi, and it also marked “Rey Day” as a celebration of the character. Rey Day included a Facebook Live Q&A and coincided with an appearance by the entire main cast on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Friday night.
Now that Rey Day is in the rearview mirror, Ridley took a moment to thank Star Wars fans via the official Twitter account in a brief video clip, which you can watch below. Rey has become the most popular movie heroine since her debut, according to eBay searches. That comes as no surprise, considering the monolithic status of the Star Wars franchise, so it makes sense to give the character her own day as well. Many celebrated the day by tweeting their favorite Rey moments from The Force Awakens and commenting on the popularity of the character.

Ridley has really started to make the rounds in recent weeks to promote The Last Jedi, along with the rest of the cast, and she has revealed some intriguing nuggets about the film’s mysterious plot along the way. She revealed in a recent interview that the sequel will include a scene between herself and Carrie Fisher as Leia that will be “hard to watch” and “emotional for a variety of reasons,” presumably due in part to Fisher’s sudden passing in 2016. She can’t say much about the big reveal of Rey’s parentage, however, but she said that she was “very moved” by it and that thanks to Johnson’s direction, “everyone will be in that moment.”
While Rey Day may not have revealed anything monumental about the character or her narrative in The Last Jedi, Rey’s popularity shone through in the thousands of social media posts about her. Ridley’s excitement for the film and her appreciation of the fan support was also quite evident in her “overwhelmed” response in the video.
Ridley has recently said that she doesn’t want to play Rey beyond Episode IX, and it’s understandable that she wouldn’t want her career to be defined by a single character. But at the end of the day, it will be hard for most moviegoers to recognize her as anyone else – and that’s largely because she’s delivered such a compelling performance.
