DC Comics has decided to suspend veteran comic book editor Eddie Berganza, who is battling sexual misconduct allegations from multiple women. As Hollywood becomes increasingly conscious of and repulsed by the improper sexual behavior of several well-known personalities in the business, more and more victims are amassing the courage to share their stories and call out those who have wronged them in an effort to stop this phenomenon from continuing in the years to come.
The latest on the long list of those who have been accused of harassment is the DC Comics Group Editor, who is mostly known for his writing work on Batman , Titans and
Wednesday Comics . Berganza made a name for himself in 1998 when he won the Comics Buyer’s Guide Fan Award for Favorite Editor and has since then risen through the ranks in the popular comic book company. In last several years, he has mainly overseen the publication of Superman , Supergirl , and Wonder Woman comics as these IPs get adapted into TV series and movies.
In a statement released by DC Comics, the company announces the suspension of Berganza and lays out their plans on how they are going to handle the situation going forward:
The above press release appears to be a response to a report from Buzzfeed News that came out earlier this week rounding up several women’s sexual harassment accusations against Berganza. The editor’s improper behavior appears to be somewhat of an open secret in the industry, unfortunately, the company seemingly turned a blind eye on it – despite a multi-employee HR complaint filed against him in 2010 – due to his significant contributions to their business. This comes on the heels of the suspension of Arrowverse TV producer Andrew Kreisberg, who is also battling similar allegations.
Following the fall of big shot Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein – which served to shine a light on this ugly and previously less talked about side of show business – similar actions of other well-known personalities like Kevin Spacey and Louis C.K. have perpetuated talks about the issue. It is definitely disheartening to hear these horror stories but it is important that people continue to have conversations about it and most importantly take a stand against this type of unacceptable behavior from predatory people, regardless of their power or status.
